Ben and Jami made the quick flight for a long weekend here last week! They picked a great weekend to come, as Bend was hosting WinterFest and ZwickelMania here in town. We rented a sweet little place right off the Deschutes River (near Mirror Pond) and right across the bridge from downtown. Close enough to all of the action and for us to sample various brews!
On Friday we ventured a bit south of Bend so that we could get in a solid day of fly fishing on the Fall River near Sunriver. This is a beautiful stream, that is absolutely gin-clear, and slow moving as it meanders through the tall pines below Mt. Bachelor. Because the fish are fairly spooky and educated, catching fish requires stealthy bank movement and a really good drift of your fly. We had a blast walking the banks and sight-fishing for trout, as Jami and Jeneé walked the banks and enjoyed the 55 degree sunny springlike day.
Of course no visit to Bend would be complete without trips to the many breweries in town. At this point I think we are somewhere around 14 or 15 breweries in town. We notched pints at: 10 Barrel, Crux (fav), Bend Brewing, Boneyard, Old Mill, and Deschutes at WinterFest. We had a blast sharing tastes, and talking about which brews we like the most!
Saturday, Ben and I fished the Crooked River east of Bend, while the girls messed around town and explored some retail destinations. Ben was POUNDING fish on the Crooked, and at one point he was catching fish on what seemed like every fifth cast! That night we enjoyed WinterFest, and all that goes with festivals (including ice sculptures). For me, the highlight was definitely the Led Zeppelin and ACDC cover bands that rocked an outside stage. Especially the ACDC band, a group made up of all females, named Hells Belles. The riffs and vocals were dead-on and even their lead guitarist ran aroundthe stage and shredded just like angus. Rock on Hells Belles!
With foggy heads, we went for a nice hike along Tumalo Creek up to Tumalo falls on Sunday. It was another bluebird day, and the weather was fantastic! After touring the falls, Ben decided to do his own polar plunge, and within a few minutes he was completely under 35 degree water in his skivvies. What a guy!
Great weekend Ben and Jami! We want more visitors soon!
